RSPB Garden Birdwatch
I spent an hour yesterday counting garden birds for the RSPB Garden Birdwatch. It was a low count (probably the lowest ever) this year but the garden has been very quiet bird-wise this Winter.
Birds Seen in the Garden
Robin x 1
House Sparrow x 5
Wood Pigeon x 2
Blue Tit x 3 (one individual was investigating the nest-box in the Whitebeam)
Magpie x 2
Blackbird x 2
Coal Tit x 1
Dunnock x 1
Wren x 1
100 yards from the garden around 15 Magpies were congregating in a noisy and squabbling manner in a clump of trees.
I am sorry for lack of posts so far this year. I've been trying to decide whether or not to continue using this as a separate blog for my garden wildlife or to revert back to putting it all on Ragged Robin's Nature Notes. I will probably carry on with this one and perhaps put a link to it on my main blog. I still get visits from a couple of people to RRNN who I think in the main were only looking for moth posts so they must think I have given up on my moth trap and spend all my time church crawling and visiting NT properties!

Well done for joining in - I forgot completely! When I last did it, I logged very few birds, which was frustrating as I had many more birds commonly seen, but I think they went into hiding on purpose! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Mandy. Easy to forget - I put it on the calendar and there were constant reminders on Twitter! I didn't expect a great total this year but I had to smile at your last comment as I have felt the same in the past. They usually put in an appearance the minute the hour is up!!
DeleteThank you for your comment on my count. Yes, we were thrilled to have both Woodies as they are both semi-regular visitors. Lucky you spotting the Goldcrest, a bird I have only seen twice. I keep hoping to see a Firecrest. I know your blog dilemma. In the end I stopped my Land&Lit one as the landscape fitted with my wildlife and the literature fed into my poetry and writing blog. It will be interesting to see what you decide.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment Caroline. We quite often get Goldcrest in the garden but they are so tiny you an so easily miss them. I would love to see a Firecrest too - one of my "bogey" birds despite going on several local "twitches" to try and see one :(
DeleteI started this blog at a time when I had become disillusioned with blogging (it happens from time to time!) and thought it would be a fresh start but then I just ended up putting on here what would have gone of the other blog anyway! Will try as mentioned putting link on other blog so anyone that was looking for my garden wildlife stuff will hopefully be able to find it and then see how it goes!
I think when you do have more than one blog one tends to take second place.
I did the birdwatch on the saturday.. I did a post about it. I actually had more this year then others which is strange. But of course more arrived once the hour was up! :o)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment Julia. I will check out your post now and see what you spotted! The birds always do seem to keep pouring in once that hour has passed!! :)
