Drone Fly on Bergenia flowers yesterday.
There are a couple of similar species but I think this is
Eristalis tenax - a honey bee mimic.
The larvae of Eristalis species are aquatic "maggots" living in damp decaying vegetation mainly in ditches and ponds but sometimes in farm manure pits and silage.
I'm so glad you were able to name this creature as we had one (pretty sure identical) yesterday. I had left my camera inside!
ReplyDeleteThanks Caroline - glad to help. It, or another one, may return - I often see them at this time of the year.
